AN EDITORIAL
First, let's look at the Golan. The Israeli government has been lobbying hard to get the Syrian-Israel "Peace" talks started this spring. The Jerusalem Post (January 29) reports that:
"President Clinton said on Tuesday that bringing Israel and Syria back to the negotiating table will be a "major focus" of his February 13 meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, but that resuming talks is dependent on "the willingness of the parties." "What our experience has been ../... that when both parties want to make peace, no matter how far apart they seem, we find a way to get there. If they're not sure it's time to make peace, no matter how close it seems to an outsider, we don't seem to be able to bridge the gaps," Clinton told reporters in the first press conference since his inauguration. "There will never be a comprehensive peace in the Middle East" until an Israeli-Syrian deal is achieved, he said. Netanyahu expressed optimism on Tuesday over the prospect of finding a "bridging formula" to enable resumption of the peace talks with Syria and to conclude them."
The article further states that four Likud MKs said on Tuesday they would not rule out a partial withdrawal from the Golan Heights. The MKs were responding to an initiative by Israel Radio which contacted them to ask their opinions. The reporter said other Likud MKs had expressed similar sentiments off the record.
The Golan Residents Committee was shocked over the comments by the four coalition members.
Members of the Freeman Center said that these statements were a trial balloon for the policy of
surrendering the Golan. It is clear to the experts at the Freeman Center, that NO negotiations with
Syria will lead to peace. ANY negotiations will have as their goal, an Israeli withdrawal from the
Golan. The word "peace" will be misused in the Orwellian sense to give the government cover.
There will be NO PEACE as a withdrawal from the Golan will have the paradoxical effect of
making war MORE PROBABLE, due to Israel's weakened strategic situation. Anyone who
enters into negotiations with Syria endangers Israel's security and is guilty of gross negligence and
dereliction of duty. It is clear that time is running out for the Golan.
Israel's beautiful capital will also not be spared the butchers knife. Bibi's response to Jewish
construction plans at Har Homa and Mt. Olives reveals his FEAR of Jewish development of
Jerusalem. It also expresses his ultimate goal of dividing the city with a terrorist gang. Were he to
support the massive building of Jewish suburbs in all parts of Jerusalem, then we would know he
intended to protect Israel's capital and not divide it. HE HASN'T, SO WE KNOW!
So what can we do? The first thing is to stay informed, so that you will not become a victim of all the Orwellian doublespeak. When Bibi and Clinton call for an Israel-Syrian Peace, know well that peace is not being discussed -- only Israel surrender of the Golan.
The second thing is to make your views known to political leaders in both Israel and America.
Never underestimate the power of letters. On most issues very few people write to their
representatives. Your letter, therefore, has tremendous weight.
The third thing that you can do is to spread the TRUE FACTS in your community. THE MACCABEAN is designed to facilitate the photo-copying of your favorite articles for distribution to friends and relatives. I try to include the best articles in every issue. Please take advantage of this great repository of good material. And finally, please remember that we are correct in our thinking, no matter how many dispute this fact. ("If you can keep your head, while all around you people are losing theirs.") The truth will win out in the end. It can not be suppressed forever.
