WINSTON MID EAST ANALYSIS & COMMENTARY
September 10, 2006 - Today is 9/11 x 5 years

Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert not only lifted Israel’s sea blockade against cargo ships carrying arms from Iran to Hezb’Allah but, also ordered the Israeli Air Force to cease firing on truck convoys from Syria to Lebanon known to be carrying fresh supplies of missiles to Hezb’Allah.

"The Hizbollah Bombardment Opened Eyes of Terror Groups" article in U.S. Defense News by Uzi Rubin fully iterates how the stature of the bombardment rocket and its multiple launcher capability to that of superpower-busters. Quoting Rubin:

"What the Gulf War of 1991 did to the obsolete SCUDs and its home-made clones, the August fighting in northern Israel and southern Lebanon did to the obsolete Katyushas and their siblings from the factories of Syria and Iran. They are now etched in the minds of every terrorist and any radical wannabe as a weapon of decision - weapons that can humble technologically superior Western military forces...In the hands of the terrorist, the humble rocket aimed at civilians assumes a strategic role....During the month long hostilities, more than 4,000 Syrian-made rockets slammed into Israel - a veritable blitz...Despite their notorious inaccuracy, more than 1,000 rounds landed within built-up areas...killing 53 Israelis, while thousands more were maimed and wounded....One million Israelis lived in or near shelters, with a further 250,000 migrating to safety in the south of Israel....The emergence of the rocket as a strategic threat in the hands of rogue states and terror organizations is a challenge to the U.S., Israel and the entire West....We have the technologies and we have the resources. What we now need is to have the will." (1)

Olmert once could have taken shelter behind the claim of stupidity or even lack of knowledge of warfare because he never served actively in the military but rather in the Public Relations. Neither did his Defense Minister Amir Peretz, who serviced tanks for his military service. But, Olmert and Peretz have long surpassed excuses of bad judgement, stupidity and the inability to make decisions during extreme conflict. Now Olmert moves well past the known record of England’s Neville Chamberlain or the Norwegian Vidkun Quisling.

I think many are comparing what has been happening in Israel’s political system to the infamous doctrine of Vidkun Quisling known to some as Norway’s Benedict Arnold. The following describes Quisling’s betrayal of the nation, masquerading as a political party under the National Union, a Fascist Party who received financial subsidies from Germany. (Does this sound familiar?) As in all the other occupied countries, the Nazi power profited from the support of local sympathizers. During a visit to Hitler in Berlin the winter of 1939-40, the leader of the national socialist Nasjonal Samling Party, Quisling, had pointed out how valuable it would be for Germany to occupy Norway. Immediately after the Nazi invasion, on the morning of April 9, 1940 , he proclaimed himself the new head of the government and ordered the Norwegian armed forces to stop battling the Germans. But Quisling’s intervention backfired and stimulated the resistance. Thus, the occupying power quickly realized that - for the time being - Quisling did not serve their interests and they chose to base their administration of the country on a certain degree of give-and-take with the existing civilian authorities. The Germans installed Quisling as prime minister in 1942 and throughout the war he collaborated with the Nazis. Quisling was tried and executed after the war. (2)
Olmert is a clear and present danger to the nation and, if the nation is to survive all laws that protect such leaders against prosecution should be put aside under the desperate need of martial law. Laws are meant to arrange certain civilized behavior so cars and then drivers know that one stops when the light turns red and go on green. Laws recognize the weakness of men who need sensible guidelines because they are not able themselves to act sensibly to certain events and circumstances.

But, there are times when the law is either irrelevant due to the type of ruler who has taken power or where that ruler uses the law for his own purposes against populace. Hitler and his gang were master at this - using the courts as a legitimate conduit to take away the rights of the people and, of course, make Genocide legal within the law.
Israel has been spiraling down for a long time as the political parties and stronger unethical leaders emerged as they discovered they could get away with the antics of tyrants. Some were better at using the cover of calling themselves a ‘democracy’ when they were in most ways autocracies or dictatorships.

As a relevant aside, we watched Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Aharon Barak play the role of legal dictator. He is now to be replaced as Supreme Court Justice by Dorit Beinish. This Judge has, like Barak, has been known for her judicial decisions to favor political bias and (what is called) an "activist " Supreme Court leaning far to the Left. The Israeli Supreme Court has been recognized by their peers internationally as an "Activist Court" - meaning, instead of ruling objectively based upon the law, they rule as if they are a "Leftist Political Party".

Israel is in deep trouble and desperately needs a return to its earliest ‘raison d’etre’ (reason for being). This can only be accomplished by a ruthless house cleaning and replacement of government officials with integrity, a belief in their right to live on Land that is theirs and the patriotism that once was an unquestioned component inherent in elected rulers.
