BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
By Moshe Sheskin
World War III is upon us. It started not with Hezbollah attacking Israel or Israel\'s response. It started not with September Eleventh; the downing of the plane over Lockerbie, Scotland into the Atlantic Ocean, and it wasn\'t the attempt to bring down planes flying from England to the U.SA., or any of the other criminal acts perpetrated against innocent civilians.
It started when enough terrorists presented themselves ready to die for the sake of Allah and the desire to spread Islam throughout the world. The exact date isn\'t important but what is important is to accept the fact that the enemy of all freedom loving people is Islamist megalomania. Fortunately, not all Muslim States can be tagged as fanatical but what they do have in common is a fanatical hatred of Israel and all that it stands for. Islamic fanatical countries such as Iran, Iraq, Libya and Syria etc. and with them a number of non-Muslim countries such as Cuba and Venezuela have thrown in their lot with Islamic fanatics, all terrorists of modern times with a common goal, to rid the world of Israel for all time.
And they\'ve grown quite proficient in how to destroy lives and property.. During World War II, German V2 rockets were indiscriminately deployed over England, causing great loss of life and property.. Today, Israel has been the victim of the same type of Nazi ideology aimed at killing Jews, no matter how many other people die with them.
They don\'t differentiate between combatants and non combatants; they use civilians as targets. Once again we are the \'chosen people\', chosen to die for the sake of the world, while that great debating society, the so called United Nations tries to determine our fate.
And the Europeans look on, fearing for their oil source, for their markets and their investment opportunities even as they are in line for an Islamic takeover themselves. Thus we get resolutions in the UN, not to disarm Hezbollah but rather keep them intact so that this war can only be the harbinger for the next because there will be a next. They and we haven\'t learned a thing from UNIFIL, that obsolete military body with the blue hats whose duty was only to report but stand aside and let the Hezbollah take up their positions armed by the Iranians and the Syrians.
It isn\'t enough that we have to fight the fanatical Muslims by ourselves; we have to contend with world opinion and the international press. I have nothing but contempt for most of the radio and television networks. But they are not alone, they are adequately helped by various news agencies such as the Associated Press and Reuters and newspapers throughout the USA, who have long been opposed to Israel, amongst them the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and many more. They use their medium not to report but to make news, fabricate fraudulent pictures in their support of the poor, innocent Lebanese.
So what about these Lebanese, who have allowed the Hezbollah to create bunkers in apartment building, store ammunition in hospitals, mosques and nurseries? They embraced Hezbollah and watched as thousands of rockets and their launchers were brought into Lebanon. They allowed the Hezbollah to take over cities, towns and villages while the Lebanese army of over 70,000 personnel stood by..
So we see the collateral damage of dead Lebanese and the destruction of their cities but very little do we see of the displacement of Israel\'s population, of Israel\'s dead and wounded, of the destruction caused by the rockets. The rocket that fell on the hospital in Naharia was never reported nor was the one that fell on Tzfat. Very little is said of how our army tries to prevent harming the civilian population and in many cases, risking the lives of Israeli soldiers.
An Israeli newspaper man circulated an article he would have liked to see Olmert write and in it he says,
"Ladies and gentlemen, it\'s time you understood: the Jewish state will no longer be trampled upon. We will no longer allow anyone to exploit population centers in order to bomb our citizens. No one will be able to hide anymore behind women and children in order to kill our women and children.. This anarchy is over. You can condemn us, you can boycott us, you can stop visiting us and, if necessary, we will stop visiting you."
The Israeli population is concerned that Olmert, the Prime Minister and Peretz, the Defense Ministe,r are more interested in their particular political positions and that of their parties.
So a resolution has been accepted by the UN, placing is a very delicate and difficult situation. Iran\'s ability to create an atomic weapon is imminent and they wouldn\'t hesitate to use it while the UN debates the issue and removes our ability to react. Hezbollah will not be disarmed.
. This is a battle not only for our freedom but for the entire world. Just as I was opposed to us leaving Gaza, I am opposed to what Olmert calls the \'CONVERGENCE\' plan, which is a unilateral withdrawal from most of the West Bank and the displacement of approximately 700,000 Israelis.
But we are eternal optimists and can only hope that the free world reacts to Iran and Syria, not only for our sake but for al countries that uphold democratic principles. We in turn should begin to clean our house by electing responsible and capable people to lead us to what will definitely be another round in the fight for our existence. We are between a rock and a hard place. but optimistic. No matter how difficult and no matter how impossible things look, we will persevere. We have no alternative.
