COHERENT POLICY TO SAVE ISRAEL by David Basch March 12, 2006
Sharon and Olmert's Kadima must be recognized as a party without vision that believes in the fairy tale that Israel can trust peace to 100 million Arabs that want to destroy her and can afford to gut the natural perimenter defense that keeps the enemy far off and prevents it from successfully mobilizing forces against Israel. The Kadima policy smacks of an other worldly insanity of an ideology that makes more sense on Mars than on Earth.
"Contrary to what was alleged in the propaganda column by Gershom Gorenberg in NY Times, Israel does indeed have full claim to the lands assigned to the Jewish people under the Mandate of Palestine...."
"So successful was this element of a coherent Israeli policy that included Jewish community building, that the Arabs were stampeded to enter negotiations,..."
"The [coherent] policies that Israel must return to are spelled out below and require an Israeli government that believes in the rightness of the Israeli cause and determined to bring Israel's people the future they are entitled to and justly deserve...."
Jonathan Tobin, an editor at the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent, recently (3.6.06) wrote the following in The Jerusalem Post:
"The American Jewish Left, like its Israeli counterparts, was right that Israel couldn't afford to ignore the demographic disaster that holding on to lands where millions of Palestinians lived represented. The Right never had a coherent answer to this challenge."
While Tobin is right that Israelis and the Jewish left were correct in recognizing that the demographics of millions of Palestinian Arabs could not be ignored in holding lands in which these Arabs lived, he fails to recognize that the Israeli Right and Sharon (that is, when Sharon acted in support of the Right) were correct morally and tactically in pursuing the "settlement" policy as an answer to this Arab demographic problem. What the Right failed to do was to persist in this policy and to continue to assert Jewish Rights and to press this to its logical conclusion. Such a coherent policy would have called for Israel's unapologetic control of these territories as a vital security interest and as an affirmation of Jewish rights to these lands.
Contrary to what was alleged in the propaganda column by Gershom Gorenberg in the NY Pravda Times (3.10.06), Israel does indeed have full claim to the lands assigned to the Jewish people under the Mandate of Palestine. While Gorenberg cites the contrary opinions on this of leftist universalist academics and those paid agents deliberately falsifying this issue, as well those of outright flakes -- this is the same dismal combination of demented opinion that led to the restoration of the defeated Arafat and his army that resulted in the unprecedented skyrocketing of terrorist strife in Israel -- Gorenberg provides no facts to prove his case. All he can show is that the nations of the world, most of whom enemies of Israel and supporters of Israel's enemies, affirmed this doctrine, the way most of these supported the view that Zionism is Racism -- an unequally false docrine.
Gorenberg went on to allege that it was illegal for Israel not to honor the international Geneva Conventions concerning "occupation" on the basis of know nothing opinion, including Leftist Israeli legal counselors. Yet he never considers that officials in the know, like Eugene Rostow, Under Sectretary of State under Lyndon Johnson, showed the inapplicability of the Geneva Convention since Israel's territories ARE NOT in a foreign country but are part and parcel of the of the lands of Mandate of Palestine that similarly legitimate Jewish claims to the rest of Israel. The fact is that Israel is the only nation that has sovereign claims to these Mandate lands since the Arab residents of those lands are just that, residents. They are without national rights. That Israel's Leftist theorists later on referred to those Arabs, many of whom of recent and diverse national origins, as a "Palestinian people" ranks as another of the utter falsehoods surrounding the issues involved.
Given the foregoing, the building of Jewish communities in Israel's territories -- hardly lands occupied -- is part of a coherent policy that enables Israel to deal with the vital interests involved. With an Arab world dedicated to Israel's destruction, these lands are vital to Israel, not least for serving as defensive borders and for giving the nation strategic depth in war, but also as an affirmation of Israel's historic rights to all her lands -- rights that are denied by the would-be Arab killer-usurpers to this day.
While originally it was envisioned by Leftist theorists that Jews and Arabs could live amicably under arrangements that include Israeli democracy and autonomy, the way it turned out was that the Arab residents do not accept the legitimacy of Israel and have been dedicated in thought and deed to Israel's destruction. Hence despite Israel's rights under the Mandate of Palestine, the entire Arab world claims that only the Arabs are the true owners of the lands of Israel and, despite the international illegality of their actions to attempt Israel's destruction, they have been engaged to reverse the existence of Israel.
In pursuit of this illegal doctrine of Israel's destruction aimed at a member of the United Nations, the Arabs, under the false name of "national liberation" -- there is no "Palestinian nation" to be liberated since it never existed and was not mentioned in UN Resolution 242 as late as in 1967, which would have mentioned it had it existed -- have ever since engaged in horrific terrorist crimes against Israel and have gone so far as instituting a program of education to teach Arab children to become suicide murderers, pausing only to indulge in ruses of negotiation with Israel so as to advance the deadly Arab aims.
Accordingly, in the face of the continuing, implacable Arab war to destroy and replace Israel, the building of Jewish communities in the territories is in fact part of a comprehensive answer to this Arab challenge. Such communities affirm Israel's rights to her lands and place Israeli civilians and soldiers in locations in the territories that limit Arab aggression.
What is more, so successful was this element of a coherent Israeli policy that included Jewish community building, that the Arabs were stampeded to enter negotiations, promising peace in return for Israel's turning over lands to Arab control in the territories.
What went wrong was that an unscrupulous Leftist leadership in Israel, seeing this Arab peace gambit as a means of discrediting Right wing Israeli leadership and as a route to Leftist rule in Israel, threw caution to the winds and, astonishingly, accepted on the basis of an Arab handshake that the Arab jackal would abandon its Islamic and nationalist war to overthrow Israel -- as though jackals could abandon their blood lust for the lamb in return for a pat on the head. Unfortunately, what is now the Kadima Party, against reason, continues this treacherous policy that weakens Israel as it empowers and stengthens the dedicated enemies of Israel.
Thus the grievous error of Israeli policy is that the coherence inherent in her community building program in the territories was not persisted in, nor was it followed up by the military action that would have aimed at the decisive defeat of the implacable Arab enemy that resides within the lands of the Mandate. Note that this is an Arab enemy that fully believes in and practices the doctrines of attaining a military victory. A corresponding Israeli policy of decisive victory over the Arab challenge is morally and practically justified but has not been pursued by the supreme egotist, Sharon, a would-be Messaiah, that in effect ended his career by betraying his nation. Nor is there any hope that a similarly deluded unelected Olmert would do so, lest it justify the successful policies that he and Sharon had abandoned.
Israel has numerous reasons for returning to its former policy of community building with, however, the addition of a more determined military policy that would return the nation to the control of her future that Israel enjoyed before the decades long series of Leftist betrayals, albeit some of these betrayals made by leaders elected by landslides on platforms opposite to the Leftist approaches pursued. The policies that Israel must return to are spelled out below and require an Israeli government that believes in the rightness of the Israeli cause and determined to bring Israel's people the future they are entitled to and justly deserve. Israel will not get such a policy from Kadima, Labor, or others on the Leftist fringe, but knowing what this coherent policy consists anmd what it is based on may help Israelis turn to the leadership they must have in order to give the nation a new dignity and a future:
1. THE LANDS CONTESTED IN THE TERRITORIES BELONG TO ISRAEL, her being the only sovereign nation with claims to these lands of the Mandate of Palestine. As her own lands, Israel has the right to defend them and herself using military tactics commensurate with the illegal and extreme Arab challenge posed to her existence. This is a defense that calls for far reaching geographic changes in the enemy's disposition, changes designed to eliminate the capacity or potential of that enemy to harm or destroy Israel.
2. THE ARAB ENEMY IS DEDICATED TO ISRAEL'S DESTRUCTION AND REPLACEMENT BY ARABS, amply demonstrating this as a first priority with a willingness to sacrifice enormous levels of life and property to these ends. The enemy is continually amassing a population horde external to the lands of the Mandate of what now numbers from 3 to 5 million Arabs, all socialized to identify themselves as "the true owners" of the lands of Israel and to live and die even as suicide murders to those ends. The Arab enemy demands that this horde be allowed entry to the centers of Israel, a killer demand that would end the existence of Israel and a clear demonstration of the Arab intent to destroy Israel.
3. IT IS UNDENIABLE THAT ISRAEL FACES NOT A MERE "MINORITY" OF ARABS who are resident on her lands and are claimed to be "refugees" from the Mandate lands, but faces an entire Arab world numbering well over 100 million. These are united in the desire to remove the State of Israel from the region. The Arabs remaining within the natural borders set by the Mandate of Palestine are united with the rest of the Arab world in this endeavor and have an existing capacity and growing potential to bring about the destruction of Israel. Already this population approves of and contributes heavily to the terrorism of low intensity warfare and outright military attack against Israel.
4. THE ARAB CHALLENGE ONLY INCREASES OVER TIME IN NUMBER AND CAPACITY owing to the natural Arab birth rate and the ability of the Arabs to infuse the so called Arab "minority" population of the Mandate with unlimited new numbers drawn from external populations. The defense of Israel requires that this mortal threat to Israel be eliminated in accordance with changes that neutralize this condition by dispersing and removing it and thereby preventing its getting ever worse -- changes that must be imposed militarily since this would have the opposite impact on what the Arabs intend for Israel. This drastic action is equal to the dire challenge that has been posed by the Arab enemy that is responsible for its necessity.
5. IN PURSUIT OF ISRAEL'S DEFENSE AGAINST DETERMINED ENEMIES, ILLUSORY "MAGINOT LINES" MUST NOT BE DEPENDED ON, the very kind that failed at the beginning of World War II in France. The true lines of defense are Israel's strategic territories -- defensibe boundaries that Israel is entitled to under UN Resolution 242. These must be made even more secure by the relocations of hostile Arab populations that should be applied in part every time the Arabs attack Israel and at every outrage their perpetrate. Thus, the rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza must be responded to by permanenly rolling back Arab controlled lands and populations that make these populations unable to mount counter attacks against Israel.
6. NOTHING SHOULD BE DONE TO GIVE AID AND COMFORT TO PRESERVE AND ENABLE A HOSTILE ARAB POPULATION TO CONTINUE ITS WAR against Israel and this must be the rule though there may be individual exceptions. These alleged exceptions must not be the lever to prevent Israel from securing her goal of preserving the Jewish State against the Arab world that desires Israel's elimination. Remember, only 10% of populations are needed for a revolution and the Arabs have many times that number dedicated to Israel's destruction.
6. PEACE WILL COME TO THE LANDS OF THE MANDATE OF PALESTINE AS A RESULT OF THE DECISIVE DEFEAT OF ARAB CAPACITY TO WAGE WAR AGAINST ISRAEL. The inability of the Arabs to hold the expectation that they will ever achieve victory over Israel must be the ultimate measure of the adequacy of Israeli policy -- not any external power's ridiculous conception of defense through "promoting democracy" among populations that have placed Israel's destruction well before such abstract goals are even contemplated.
***** David Basch is a research associate of the Freeman Center For Stategic Studies and the world's leading authority on the Jewish roots of William Shakespeare.
