Reflections of a Frustrated Zionist--2014
by Bernard J. Shapiro
Since I completed my book, The Battle for Eretz Yisrael: Jew, G-d and Israel, 1992-2011, I have not written very much. There is a good reason for that, and it is a sad one.
It seems, as the French long ago said: " The more things change, the more they stay the same." Frankly, I am getting bored in my old age. I once believed that the rise of Israel took the Jews out of the Ghettos of Europe and the horror of the Holocaust. But it seems that it was easier to take the Jew out of the Ghetto than to take the Ghetto out of the Jew.
Once proud Sabras (native Israelis) now let Arab teenagers throw rocks and Molotov cocktails at them. They are trapped on the roads of the Holy Land, attacked with sniper fire and lynched. The Israeli police, border patrol and Israel Defense Forces let it happen.. Political correctness has run amok.
Jews can not pray on the Temple Mount, their holiest site. It is the site where Abraham, our father, was tested by G-d and proved his willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac, as G-d commanded.. Arabs have re-written history and now claim that there was never a Jewish connection to our Holiest Site. They claim that Abraham, Jesus, and other Jewish prophets were Moslems. They continue to destroy all traces of our connection to the site, and the Israeli government does nothing.
I would not tolerate it! I would throw the Waqf off the Temple Mount and replace them with unbiased Jewish police. Jews, Moslems, and Christians will of course be free to worship there.
The Israel Foreign Ministry and its diplomats let this happen for the last quarter century and said nothing. Today they say a few words, much too little and too late. When the late and great Rabbi Meir Kahane Z"L told the Israeli People the TRUTH, he was banished as a racist.
Today the Left and Arabs in Israel call for the destruction of Jews and the Jewish People. They call for the dismemberment of Eretz Yisrael, but they ARE NOT RACISTS.
When Kahane called for the transfer of enemy Arabs from Israel, he was a racist!. When Livni, Abbas, Sharon, Rabin, Peres, Olmert, and Netanyahu call for the transfer of Jews from their G-d given Holy Land they are nice politically correct democrats and believers in human rights. Fuah. I get nauseous at the stupidity, the evil (and that is the right word) and the anti-Zionism.
When I see the IDF wasting young Israeli lives to capture terrorists and then the government releasing them, it sickens me. I feel the pain of every victim of terrorism and no pain for the perpetrators. If the Red Cross does not visit Jewish prisoners, they should not have access to Arabs.
I would expel all UN forces and refugee camps from Israel. European, UN, and Church property stolen from the Jewish people over 2000 years must be nationalized. Compensation should be negotiated, but with Israeli firmness and not as weak Ghetto Jews. The Vatican must return all stolen Jewish ceremonial objects and books that it stores in its archives. And the Jewish catacombs must be opened to Israeli archeologists.
Israeli politicians all seem so egomaniacal. Is there anyone in the Knesset who truly will work for the GOOD of Israel? When will there be real constitutional reform, like constituency elections, with checks and balances between the Prime Minister, the Knesset and the Judicial System?
G-d gave us this Land in perpetuity for all generations. Any one generation, no matter how large a coalition in the Knesset they hold, has the RIGHT to dispose of it. David Ben-Gurion said this at the Zionist Congress in Basel in 1939. Even though he made compromises to get a Jewish State, He planned to recover more of the Holy Land. He understood, then, that the Arabs would never make peace, thus leaving the door open. He made lots of mistakes, the worst was attacking the Ze’ev Jabotinisky nationalists (Irgun and Stern). Cooperation then would have been much better.
But we all make mistakes, and I have made many. My time is drawing to an end and I am reminded of a beautiful song by Bob Dylan for the movie Pat Garret and Billy the Kid:
"Knockin' On Heaven's Door"
Mama, take this badge off of me
